OPPY (a short story)

“My battery is low and it’s getting dark.” was the final message of Oppy, the Mars Opportunity Rover, which was finally pronounced ‘dead’ by NASA on Wednesday, 13 February, 2019 despite numerous attempts to revive it after contact was lost on June 10, 2018.

100,000 years has passed and teams of Terçaterran archaeological cosmologists, exo-descendants of the original humans from Terra (Earth), are on the surface of Mars. They’re looking for artefacts that will shed light on their own prehistoric history.

Lopata, one of the archaeologists, finds an undulation in the lower part of a rock formation – an undulation that has no reason being there.
